Everything you need to know about gold

Gold jewelry is a popular choice for its beauty and durability, but not all gold jewelry is created equal. Have you ever wondered about the differences between gold plated, gold vermeil, and gold filled jewelry? And what exactly is gold?

Gold is an expensive and versatile metal that can be formed and changed without damage. It comes in three colors: yellow, white (which looks silver), and rose gold. These types of gold are measured in karats, with 24 karat being the purest form and 10 karat containing 41.7% gold.

Many gold jewelry pieces are mixed with other hypoallergenic metals to make them more affordable and to reduce the brightness of the color. Gold vermeil is a sterling silver piece that is dipped in gold, gold plated is any other material that is dipped in gold, and gold filled is a piece that contains at least 5% gold.

The thickness of the gold plating is measured in microns, with one micron being equivalent to one millionth of a meter. This measurement determines the quality of the plating and how long the piece will stay gold. For example, we use 1 micron 18k yellow gold for our earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, and 3 microns for our rings to ensure a longer lifespan.

At Bound Studios, we offer high-quality 3 micron gold vermeil jewelry and 14k solid gold pieces. We believe that sustainable jewelry is important and strive to create timeless pieces that will last a lifetime. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter for updates and more information.
